Dear Roy:
We have received a number of letters either direct to us or through your Mother and we are all very glad to know that you are getting along O.K. We would appreciate a letter telling us about the habits and costumes of the people where you are located. No doubt you are seeing some interesting things and it mite not be possible for you to write in detail, but any unusual traits you could pass on to us would be most welcome. We occasionally read articles in the paper written by some of the boys and their experiences are most interesting. We hope that you are getting along spendidly and it will not be too long before you can be coming home. Perhaps in a few months the main conflict will be coming to an end and things will be considerably different. Is the weather very hot where you are? I assume you are more or less in a temperate climate similar to what we have here in the States. Have been reading Ernie Pyles's articles and from what he says the weather must be very nice there most of the time. You should be getting all the oranges, olives etc that you want. Incidently what about some good old American roast beef or steaks? Do you get some of these also? Passing through Penn station today I turned around and walked back to see who the soldier was. At a glance I thought it was you but upon closer inspection found it was some other fellow who was tired and sleepy. He was reclining on one of the benches in the Waiting Room. Barbara has gone back to school and like her new teacher very much. So far she has had no homework due to the fact that her work in class has been excellent and no homework is needed. Hope she keeps up the good work. We received a letter from Mother Stracke today and they are all getting along quite O.K. She enclosed your letter to her of Aug. 28th. Barbara, Mary and Mother send their love and we all hope that you may be coming home soon.
